Do Robotic Functional Alignment and Manual Mechanical Alignment Differ in Two-year PROMs and Component Alignment?

The robot-assisted FA group had better 2-year PROMs and satisfaction. The manual MA group had higher rates of femoral coronal and tibial sagittal outliers (P = 0.017 and 0.015).

Abstract commentary

Participants and Methods

A prospectively collected database was compared retrospectively. Patients were matched 1:1 for age, sex, and BMI. There are 60 Robot-FAs and 60 Manual-MAs.

Main Findings

The robot-assisted FA group had better 2-year PROMs and satisfaction. The manual MA group had higher rates of femoral coronal and tibial sagittal outliers (P = 0.017 and 0.015).

The point of reading on surgery

These findings provide a short-term comparison of a strategy combining FA and robotic assistance. They should not be interpreted as proof of reduced long-term revision rates.

Limitations

Robot use and the alignment strategy differed simultaneously, so their individual effects cannot be separated. This was a nonrandomized Level III study. The sagittal-plane values in the abstract are not clearly defined and require cautious interpretation. The subsequent 2026 gait study did not find a difference in PROMs.

Let's put it briefly.

What did this study confirm?

The robot-assisted FA group had better 2-year PROMs and satisfaction. The manual MA group had higher rates of femoral coronal and tibial sagittal outliers (P = 0.017 and 0.015).

Can it be applied directly to individual patients' treatment decisions?

Robot use and the alignment strategy differed simultaneously, so their individual effects cannot be separated. This was a nonrandomized Level III study. The sagittal-plane values in the abstract are not clearly defined and require cautious interpretation. The subsequent 2026 gait study did not find a difference in PROMs.
